Looking after a kitten can seem like a daunting task, but don’t stress too much.

After some research, we’ve listed below some useful tips all new kitten owners should know on how to care for kittens.

Giving Your Kitten the Right Nutrients

Like all living organisms, kittens also require a balanced diet with the proper nutrients to remain healthy.

If your kitten is under four weeks old, it cannot eat solid food, regardless of whether it is canned or not. It needs its mother’s milk.

Alternatively, you can use a nutritional substitute called kitten milk replacer. You may also need to purchase a feeder.

Keep in mind that your kitten is reliant on you for food. So, be sure to give it milk on time.

If your kitten is older and able to eat solid foods, it would be best to balance high-quality commercial kitten food and some natural food.

Also, ensure that your kitten has access to clean drinking water.

Setting Up Bedding and Litter Tray

When you bring a baby kitten home, it may take some time to adjust. For example, your kitten may want to hide in a corner until it feels more comfortable to come outside.

It might be a good idea to set up a comfortable bed and litter box for your kitten.

It may be like curling up in bed with you, but it’s important to give it a separate place as well.

Make sure the bedding is dry and cozy. As for the litter box, make sure you clean it and replace the litter regularly.

It would be best to make a checklist of things you need to purchase. Not only will it help you keep track of everything you need, but it’ll also make pet budgeting easier for you.

Play Time

The best way to bond with your kitten is to spend time playing with it.

Kittens are playful animals and are full of energy. You can try getting different cat toys to keep your kitten entertained.

Sometimes, kittens can even use household items to entertain themselves. For example, have a string lying around? Try dangling it in front of your kitten and watch it play around with it.

Just make sure you keep the toys dry and clean. Also, avoid getting toys that may be sharp and dangerous for them.

Grooming Your Kitten

It helps if you start grooming your kitten early on. Then, you can use the care routine as an excellent bonding time.

Grooming helps remove dust, dead skin, loose hair, grass seed, and anything that may be caught up in your kitten’s hair.

When self-grooming, cats tend to swallow fur, and it can build up in their stomach, making them vomit. You can prevent this from happening if you groom your cat regularly.

You need to ensure the grooming experience is positive for your kitten. They should feel comfortable during the process. Avoid pulling at hair or any sudden movements. Instead, carefully trim along fur mats and tangled hair.

Also, we suggest using blunt nose scissors, and be sure to point the scissors away from your cat.

A good way to turn the grooming experience into a positive one it’s best to give your cat verbal praises, pats and treats for allowing you to clean them.

Reward-based Training

One of the best and most effective ways to train your pet is through reward-based training. This is basically a method where you reward your kitten when they behave desirably or positively.

You can give rewards in the form of treats, praises, or pats.

In this method of training, undesired behavior is ignored. For example, if your cat is scratching too much, you may want to end playtime sooner.

Avoid yelling, hitting, or spraying your kitten with a water spray. It may scare your kitten.

The best way is to reward positive behavior and ignore undesired behavior. When your kitten sees that you’re not giving them attention for the undesirable acts, they’ll stop doing those.

Scratching Poles and Other Furniture

Cats instinctively scratch at things to keep their nails in good condition. It’s a good idea to buy one or two scratching poles at home for your kittens.

Otherwise, your kitten will start scratching your furniture, and you wouldn’t want that.

Some cats also like scratching at mats. So, be sure you’re aware of your kitten’s preferences before you purchase furniture and toys for it.

Providing Proper Health Care

Now, one of the most important things you need to do as a new cat parent is to ensure your kitten gets proper health care.

Get annual checkups. Make sure you’re up to date on all the required vaccinations. It would also help to get flea and worm prevention.

You might also want to look into desexing. Desexing your kitten before maturity will stop unplanned and unwanted litters of kittens.

It is also beneficial for their health and promotes beneficial behavior. For instance, your cats stop roaming around and urine marking. It also prevents your cat from getting into fights.
