Waking up in the morning with an aching body part is no fun, right? Especially if it’s your stomach.

Stomach ache is the pain you feel in your abdomen. It could range from a light sensation to a more severe throbbing, burning feeling. Depending on the intensity, stomach ache usually doesn’t last long and is mostly not a reason for concern.

Constipation

Constipation is the infrequency in passing stool; precisely, having less than three bowel movements a week is constipation. If you have it, don’t worry! It’s quite common amongst the American population.

The frequency of passing stool varies from person to person. Some people pass it every day, and for some, twice a week could be the norm. The idea is that the longer you go without passing a stool, the harder it can get to pass it.

You can be constipated for many reasons.

  • Changes in routine
  • Pregnancy
  • Eating foods low in fiber

Indigestion

Indigestion, or dyspepsia, is the feeling of heaviness in your chest after eating. You feel as if you’ve overeaten. It is often accompanied by a burning sensation in your upper abdomen.

Some common symptoms of indigestion include:

  • Heaviness in your chest
  • Feeling too full during or after eating
  • Nausea
  • Excessive gases
  • Acidic taste

Indigestion is not a disease in itself, but it can indicate other underlying illnesses, such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or any other digestive disease. 

Indigestion can be cured with lifestyle changes and medicines usually. However, if your indigestion worsens or you feel as though it may indicate some other disease, get in touch with your doctor.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis, or stomach flu, is an inflammation of your intestine lining, mainly caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It is often accompanied by abdominal pain along with fever, diarrhea, nausea, and headache.

Since it can cause vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration is a big problem with gastroenteritis. Therefore, you must drink plenty of fluids to retain your energy levels. It usually goes away without any major treatment.

Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is the result of eating contaminated, expired, or infectious food. It often results in nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, and diarrhea.

The most common causes of food poisoning are parasites, viruses, and bacteria. The three infectious organisms can contaminate the food at any time, from growing to eating. 

Food poisoning doesn’t usually go undetected as its symptoms are quite prominent. In most cases, you can treat it at home. It is best to take plenty of fluids and lots of rest to regain your power.

However, food poisoning can sometimes be life-threatening as well. Some of the life-threatening symptoms are:

  • Bloody urine or vomit
  • High fever 
  • Severe dehydration
  • Blurred vision or weakened muscles
  • Diarrhea for longer than three days
  • Extreme abdominal pain

Appendicitis

If you constantly feel pain in your lower right abdomen, it could be appendicitis. The appendix is a finger-shaped pouch attached to your large intestine that helps your body fight away infections.

But, the appendix itself can also get infected. Appendicitis occurs when your appendix gets inflamed. You may feel severe pain moving along your abdomen as the inflammation increases. 

The most common symptoms of appendicitis include:

  • Pain in your lower right abdomen
  • Difficulty moving, walking, or coughing
  • Bloatedness
  • Fever and nausea
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite

If left untreated, appendicitis can get worse, and your appendix can rupture. The standard treatment of appendicitis is a surgery that removes your appendix.

Gas Pains

Sometimes your stomach might be aching because you are unable to pass gas. Passing gas through burping or flatulence is a normal process of your digestive system.

But, if a tiny bubble of gas gets stuck inside your body, it can cause gas pains. Trapped gas can make you uncomfortable to the extent that you feel as if you’re having a cardiac arrest.

Some common causes of gas pains are foods that produce gas, and swallowing air while eating or drinking. Your constipation can also make you feel gaseous.

You can treat gas pains by trying some yoga poses, massaging on the spot, or walking around to relieve the pressure. 

Stress

Your mental health affects your physical health too. Think of the knots in your stomach when you feel stressed. Stress-related stomach ache is quite common.

Common symptoms of a stress-related stomach ache may include:

  • Bloatedness
  • ‘Butterflies’ in the stomach
  • Twitching of muscles
  • Uneasiness or nausea
  • Excessive bowel movements or urination
  • Cramps or knots in the stomach
  • Indigestion

Stress can impact your overall physical health if left untreated. A few lifestyle changes might help deal with stress and stress-related problems. 

Additionally, you can consult a professional if your stress seems to overtake your life.
