It removes plaque from the tooth surfaces. So, it’s essential to brush your teeth twice a day to eliminate the threat of cavities and plaque.

Oral Effects of Cannabinoids
Dental plaque is a global health problem that affects millions of people, regardless of their age. Cannabinoids are gaining enormous research attention due to their beneficial properties for various applications in oral health.
A recent observation on cannabinoids against dental plaque has shown that the cannabinoids infused mouthwash can be proved beneficial against the bacterial content from the dental plaque trials.
Cannabinoids have the potential as an effective antibacterial against dental plaque bacteria. It also provides a safer alternative for antibiotics to reduce the development of drug resistance.
What Research Suggests
To test the hypothesis, researchers and health experts took samples from 60 people. They tested the patients with a solution containing a mix of the five cannabinoids or one of the popular toothpaste brands.
The results showed the cannabinoids as the victor for doing the job better against the famous toothpaste products like Colgate and Oral B in removing the bacteria from the samples.
The same researchers conducted another test where they took two types of mouthwash containing cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) respectively.
Each mouthwash contained less than one percent cannabinoid by weight in vitro against total-culturable bacteria from dental plaque samples collected from 72 healthy adults.
They assembled the participants on Dutch periodontal screening index (DPSI) score. To compare our products’ efficacy, two available products were included i.e. Product 1 and Product 2) to represent commercially available mouthwash products.
Moreover, they added the standard chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% as a positive control.
What Products Represented?
To summarize, here is what the two products represented:
- Product 1 represents mouthwash containing necessary oils and alcohol.
- Product 2 represents mouthwash that contains fluoride and is alcohol-free.
All products were observed directly without any thinning through disc diffusion and agar well diffusion approaches. Then, they measured the diameter of the zone.
The study’s limitation was that the samples were labeled, and the examiner who performed the manual measurements was untied to test the products used.
The cannabinoids infused mouthwash merchandise confirmed the same bactericidal efficacy as that of chlorhexidine 0.2%. Both chlorhexidine 0.2% and cannabinoids infused mouthwash merchandise dominated as opposed to all the tested samples.
The highlighted findings were:
- Product A no longer displayed any sizable antimicrobial body in any of the samples tested.
- Product B no longer displayed any detectable inhibition area in any respect in any of the samples tested.
The tiers for inhibition zones showed the following results:
- For CBD mouthwash, the tiers inhibition zones have been 8–25 mm (18.1 mm).
- CBD-mouthwash, 8–25 mm (17.7 mm) for CBG-mouthwash; 12–25 mm (16.8 mm)
- For chlorhexidine 0.2%; 0–8 mm (0.1 mm) for Product A; and 0 mm for Product B.
Although the distinction in performance changed to barely better than chlorhexidine in each case, the distinction changed into statistically sizable for CBD-mouthwash and close to sizable for CBG-mouthwash.
Limitation to Cannabinoid Applications for Oral Health
The two studies suggest that there is more to Cannabinoids than essential oils and tinctures. The way cannabinoids respond to plaque formation, it’s clear that it’s a promising research area for the modern age. No wonder that Cannabis products can prove pivotal in oral health.
However, it is also important to understand that the suggested studies are just the preliminary findings. Therefore, we can’t go about predicting big things on the results from small samples.
Therefore, much comprehensive studies are needed before we could come to substantial evidence whether Cannabinoids applications can be fully implemented in the oral sector.

Although there is still time before we see commercially sponsored Cannabinoid products, we can confidently say that things are moving in the right direction. Especially when it comes to Cannabis research, numerous research papers suggest that something big is just round the corner.
Most mouthwash products today contain chlorhexidine. However, chlorhexidine doesn’t prevent teeth staining. Therefore, it isn’t always appropriate for everyday use.
Cannabinoids (CBD / CBG) infused mouthwashes collectively with different herbal key elements indicate promising results. So, we might see products with infused herbs in the future.
