With legislation backing up the cannabis industry, there is an increase in chaos in the cannabis industry. While adults are rushing to this natural drug, teenagers are also exposing themselves to the compounds of cannabis.
But is it safe for kids or teens to consume cannabis by any means? Do they get an addiction to the drug leading to severe health conditions? ProjectCBD has discussed this Pediatric anxiety in their release, so here we will be talking about it.
A Wake-Up Call
With the surge in cannabis/Marijuana popularity since 1960, young Americans were getting more inclined to the drug. Corresponding to this trend, there was an elevation in the diagnosed cases of ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a mental condition where an individual sits for a more prolonged period while focusing on a task. This psychological problem causes abnormal hyperactivity and impulsivity in human beings. Regardless of age, anyone can develop this health condition.
Some of the common symptoms of the disease are :
- The trouble with a concentration on tasks
- Forgetfulness (about the functions)
- The problem with sitting still or hyperactivity
- Unnecessary interruption while people talk
Dr. Tom O’Connell, a retired thoracic surgeon and ex-captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, associated ADHD with “pediatric anxiety syndrome.”
Dr. O’Connell started to take an interest in medical cannabis after he retired in 2000 and started to see the medical use of cannabis in Oakland.
Such interest in Dr. O’Connell led him to compile a massive database to analyze the use of medical cannabis in 6000 patients.
The findings of his analysis were not only surprising but a mere challenge to both drug-policy makers and drug obstinate who force the ban on marijuana for under twenty-one individuals.
The Clueless Legislations
Dr. O’Connell, in his publication, said that the current marijuana dispute is linked to different enchanted clues. While lamenting the reform leaders, he said that they were almost as naïve as the authorities and just as vulnerable to fundamentalist views regarding teen drug intake and addiction.

Why Do Young Individuals Get Addicted to Cannabis?
Do you know why people who try cannabis become addicted to using the drug daily? Or do you know how credible the medical claims of cannabis are? Unfortunately, we do not know that for sure.
During the research, Dr. O’Connell revealed that several individuals who were using marijuana for medical reasons were chronic users (consuming marijuana daily) by consulting him.
Moreover, he added that usually, people refrain from medical experts regarding the unpleasant sensation from marijuana.
O’Connell interviewed more than 6000 individuals, and surprisingly the chronic users of marijuana had identical societal and medicinal histories.
During the study, he revealed that young individuals primarily consume cannabis chronically as it is a harmless and effective way to reduce anxiety levels. Besides that, it can also work for certain mood disorders linked to lack of self-confidence and low self-image.
The Hype of Cannabis as an Antidepressant
While the young generation is getting more inclined to recreational and medical use of cannabis, it is more of an alarming situation. Moreover, considering that cannabis is understudied and scientists are working hard to reveal its long-term effects, the drug might be a potential threat to health until the investigation results.
Regarding the chronic or repetitive use of cannabis, Dr. O’Connell said that it might carry a more fierce tenacity than ordinary refreshment.
O’Connell has been interacting with marijuana or cannabis since the 1960s. Regarding cannabis, he believed that American youth had hugged the drug to ease the emotional symptoms that led the cannabis industry to boom.
While comparing the fame of cannabis with hot selling anxiolytics and antidepressants of Pharmaceuticals, he pointed to an important factor that treating the anxiety and depression of young people is more important than mere self-indulgence.
Young Americans regard cannabis as candy, as they do not understand the drug and its potential threats. They only consider it an efficient remedy to cope with the anxiety and chaos of the contemporary world.
Some research has shown that the endocannabinoid system can shield from stress and anxiety. Considering that, the hype of marijuana and cannabis as an antidepressant and anxiolytic among depressed teens is no surprise.
Too Much Stress Damages ECS
Our body has an intrinsic response system for stressful or frightening events named “fight or flee.” While this response is necessary for reacting to and adjusting to serious surviving threats, excessive stress can harm a person over time by decreasing endocannabinoid activity.
While most of the neurological function depends on the endocannabinoid system, a conceded ECS can be a breeding ground for different diseases to rise, hence increasing the chance of early deaths in human beings.
Frequent spikes in stress level exaggerate anxiety, resulting in considerably faster development of old age disease Alzheimer’s dementia.
Not only that, emotional stress brings an increased risk of developing or spreading cancer. Besides, stress and anxiety also alter the way fats blend in the body.
Distress is the body’s reaction to any event that places a physiological strain on that at the cellular level.
Whenever a body is under stress, the brain makes cortisol as well as other steroidal hormones, which cause the production of anandamide and 2-AG, two naturally occurring marijuana-like chemicals.
These intrinsic cannabinoids attach to basal cell receptors, restoring homeostatic state by reducing stress hormone release. Marijuana, a natural adaptogen, works similarly.
