US Air Travel with Hemp Extract

Usage of hemp extract or CBD for different health purposes has become increasingly common in the past few years.

With the FDA legalizing Epidiolex, a medicine containing pure CBD for seizures, many people are now wondering: is CBD legal to carry while traveling by air?

Well, fortunately, yes; but with lots of safety measures. That’s because the FDA doesn’t regulate any other CBD product except Epidiolex. However, the use of CBD products with a THC content of less than 0.3% is still allowed in different states.

Nevertheless, the legit question here is whether traveling with CBD is permitted by the government or not. Just a while ago, the plant was categorized alongside drugs like heroin

This guide will discuss the ins and outs of traveling with hemp in the US and overseas.

CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil vs Hemp Extract

Most people often get confused about these terms. Usually, they are even used interchangeably. So before knowing whether traveling with CBD is legal or not, specifically hemp extract, let’s talk about the major differences between these products.

Typically, CBD oil is extracted from the stems, flowers, and stalks of the Cannabis Sativa plant. On the other hand, hemp seed oil is derived from the plant’s seeds.

So any product with hemp seed oil (or Cannabis Sativa seed oil) doesn’t have CBD as its ingredients.

Hemp seeds and CBD oil.

Yet, hemp seed oil contains multiple health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, omega fatty acids, and amino acids – just like every other carrier oil (olive oil and sunflower oil). That’s the main reason why it is considered an excellent option for treating skin problems.

Anyway, CBD oil and hemp extract are somehow the same things. Both are often known as plain old hemp oil. Mostly, hemp extract is derived from those parts of the hemp plant which have CBD in abundance.

So both, CBD oil and hemp extract, are synonymous and have similar anti-inflammatory and anti-analgesic properties.

Can You Travel With Hemp in the US?

The brief answer for this is “yes.” Ever since the 2018 Farm Bill, it has become legal for travelers to carry CBD oil and related products in their luggage.

However, there are a few other regulations that you must know. Before that, let’s learn about the different types of hemp extracts.

Majorly, there are 3 types of hemp or CBD extracts available in the market at the moment, including:

  • Full-spectrum Hemp Extract: It is the pure derivative of cannabis. Therefore, it has all major and minor cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and phytocannabinoids.
  • Broad-spectrum Hemp Extract: It has all the components mentioned above of cannabis except THC.
  • Isolate Hemp Extract: It contains no ingredients other than CBD.

In the Farm Bill, the federal legislators mandated the THC content in hemp extracts to be less than 0.3% for them to be legal for sale and purchase.

Since such a negligible amount does not have an intoxicating effect, it’s understandable why they chose this percentage.

Some people might disagree, saying that THC should be completely absent from the hemp extract – hence the popularity of broad-spectrum products – but the presence of THC facilitates the CBD activity and effect.

Keeping that in mind, you must know that domestic flights only allow you to carry hemp extracts with less than 0.3% THC.

The TSA officials will look for hazardous things, such as explosives when going through the airport security checks.

Previously, they’d also confiscate the hemp extract, and you may have had to go through a legal process. However, the Farm Bill loosened several regulations, allowing people to carry hemp extracts (less than 0.3% THC) on domestic flights.

TSA’s Regulations

To sum up, here’s what you should know about traveling with hemp, as per the TSA’s guidelines. You can only carry products which:

  • Are approved by the FDA (Epidioloex is the only approved CBD product).
  • Have lower than 0.3% THC content
  • Are Medically prescribed to you by a doctor
  • Have less than 3.4 ounces of any liquid, balm, or gel

Thus, if you want a smooth traveling experience, you have to ensure that you’re following these regulations.

For that, make a list of these restrictions, tick the boxes when you follow them, and recheck them.

Tips To Consider While Traveling With CBD

Although traveling with hemp is legal, you should consider some tips before you arrive at the airport. Or else, you might have to face some restrictions due to silly mistakes.

So, here are some important tips you should remember while traveling with CBD:

  • First off, make sure that the product you’re carrying surely has less than 0.3% THC. Don’t simply rely on the amount written on the packaging.

Instead, check for the THC content on the lab report or the Certificate of Analysis. Often, manufacturers mislabel the hemp extract formulations.

  • Secondly, the TSA only allows you to carry less than 3.4 ounces of CBD oil or liquid hemp extract. So whether it’s a skincare product or a tincture, the volume must be lower than the TSA’s given limit.
  • Most importantly, if you’re carrying an oil, keep it in a shatter-proof plastic bottle to ensure that it does not break during the flight.

If you’re not careful, this could land you in trouble with the airport authorities.

Is Travelling With CBD Internationally Allowed?

Traveling with hemp in the US became legal just a few years ago. However, not every country is on the same page.

That’s why if you’re traveling internationally, you must consider the regional regulations around carrying hemp extract.

Since some countries have strict drug regulations, experts suggest leaving your CBD and hemp products at home when traveling abroad.

If you necessarily have to carry a hemp product, make sure that you confirm the other country’s hemp laws. While some countries have entirely banned CBD and hemp products, others have laws different from those in the US.

For instance, you cannot carry any product containing more than 0% THC in the UK. Meanwhile, in Italy, you can travel with products with up to 0.6% THC.

Moreover, a prescription by a doctor can also help you get through different countries’ restrictions. So it’s better to carry one with you all the time.

Benefits of Traveling With Hemp

Traveling is not always as fun as they show in vacation movies. From the stress of packing to the anxiety of passing through security checks, there’s a lot your brain has to deal with.

Fortunately, CBD can make flying much easier for you, especially if you suffer from aviophobia – the fear of flying.

Anxiety Relief

The topmost benefit of traveling with hemp is that it relieves anxiety. Yes, you can chug down a glass of wine on the plane, but it might have a behavior-altering effect, which isn’t something the other passengers will entertain kindly.

On the other hand, a hemp product will keep you calm without having any psychoactive effects.

Makes Flying Easy

For some people, flying is a stressful task, especially if they have a phobia. However, CBD can help calm them down while making it easier for them to stay relaxed during taking off and landing.

Moreover, the humidity levels in the plane cabin are lower than in the external environment, pushing your skin to produce extra oil. Since excess sebum production is a leading cause of acne, you might experience a breakout by the end of a 10-hour flight.

Luckily, research had found CBD to help prevent acne. Thus, if you pack a CBD serum or lotion in your carry-on bag, you won’t have to worry about excess sebum, dryness or skin chapping.

Keeps Pets Calm

Pets often develop severe anxiety during traveling, whether it’s by road or air. However, if you administer a few drops of CBD oil to your pet before taking off, you’ll have a comfortable flight.

All you have to do is mix a few drops of CBD oil into your pet’s food or apply it to the back of their ears to calm them down.

However, make sure to talk to a vet about the right CBD product and dosage before giving it to your pet.

Relieves Cramps

CBD oil and marijuana plants.

Most people experience sudden muscle cramps or body aches while sitting or traveling. Fortunately, CBD or hemp extract has exceptional anti-inflammatory and anti-analgesic properties that instantly relieve all sorts of pains.

So whether you start feeling inflammation in your neck or a cramp in your muscles, just consume a tiny amount of CBD product and feel relieved within minutes.

It’s better to carry a CBD topical in these cases for easy application.

Wrapping up, traveling with hemp in the US is legal as long as the product has 0.3% THC or less, is medically prescribed, or is FDA-approved.

By now, you should know quite a bit about traveling with hemp. Hopefully, the tips mentioned above will help you have a safe and trouble-free commute the next time you’re going on vacation or a business trip.
