Everything You Need To Know About CBD For Kids

CBD or cannabidiol is an important cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that has been studied extensively in the past decade. The research on it indicates that it may have multiple therapeutic benefits.

Although some parents are satisfied with scientific studies, others are skeptical about using CBD for kids.

The primary reason behind this cynicism is the misconceptions about CBD. Thus, they still have concerns about CBD for kids. Also, part of the reason is its wrongful association with marijuana’s high-causing effects. Moreover, the lack of research concerns some parents too.

Nevertheless, along with the FDA-approved drug, Epidiolex, some parents also use commercial CBD for childhood depression and hyperactivity.

If you’re an uncertain parent, this guide will help you get a better idea about; can kids use CBD and will it make your kid high?

Is CBD Safe for Kids?

“Can Kids take CBD without any harsh side effects?” is a redundant question that every parent asks. Since the effects of CBD vary broadly, there’s no precise answer to this question. However, clinical trials and preliminary studies show that CBD isn’t lethal for a child’s health.

A kid that is happy.

Research published in The Lancet indicates that a child can safely take daily doses of CBD up to 20 milligrams per kilogram of the body mass.

Typically, even in adults, the adverse effects of CBD appear in case of overdosing. However, numerous studies positively show that CBD effectively treats epilepsy, behavioral conditions, and perinatal brain damage in kids.

The FDA does not regulate CBD strictly as a prescription medication yet. However, the authority has approved a CBD drug called Epidiolex. Since it’s a prescription drug, you’ll need a doctor’s note to get this product.

Epidiolex is effective against rare epileptic conditions, called Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, observed in children.

Still, more research is needed further to certify the benefits and safety of CBD for kids.

Will CBD for Kids Make Them High?

Will CBD get your child high? Unfortunately, since there’s a lot of contrasting information on the internet, it can sometimes be hard to differentiate the truth from the misconceptions.

Before you buy CBD for kids, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the terminologies.

Firstly, you must know that CBD and THC are the components of the same plant, but they have different effects.

THC is psychoactive. Thus, its high amount can intoxicate the user. In contrast, CBD has no such effect.

However, when you buy CBD oil for kids, you’d often notice the presence of THC in the product. Does this mean that the oil or gummy will make your child high?

If the product has less than 0.3% THC, it cannot possibly cause a high. That’s the limit set by the regulatory authorities. Therefore, when buying CBD oil for kids, make sure it has less than 0.3% THC.

However, if you’re bothered by this minute amount of THC, too, you can opt for oils that are made using broad-spectrum CBD or isolate.

Broad Spectrum CBD

On the other hand, broad-spectrum hemp extract contains CBD and other plant components, excluding THC. In this way, your child will get additional benefits of flavonoids and phytocannabinoids without being exposed to THC.

CBD for Kids Is Not Cheap

While experts often sing praises of CBD oil for kids, they fail to inform that CBD is not cheap. A tincture bottle can cost you anything from $30 to $130, depending on its potency.

Even worse, insurance does not cover CBD for kids.

Thus, you’ll have to pay for this extra expense out of your pocket. The CBD dosage for ADHD children can be pretty high, with multiple administrations a day.

If you have a child with ADHD or a similar disorder, you’ll have to allocate a certain amount from your monthly budget to pay for the CBD cost.

The prices differ based on where you buy the products and how much the state taxes CBD vendors.

Do Commercial Products Work Like Epidiolex?

Epidiolex is an administered and regulated medication for seizures in children. On the other hand, there’s no evidence to show that the CBD oil for kids you bought online will have the same results.

But then again, it’s important to note that even Epidiolex does not come without risks.

Some common side effects of the medication include rash, weakness in the user’s body, infections, insomnia, lethargy, diarrhea, and diminished appetite.

If your child exhibits signs of aggressive behavior or has panic attacks, you should immediately stop administering Epidiolex and consult your doctor.

Can Kids Take CBD for Autism?

Many parents use CBD oil for kids with autism. In a 188-member study, it was seen that kids with an autistic spectrum disorder who took 30% CBD oil three times a day had an improvement in different symptoms.

These included rage attacks, restlessness, and seizures.

However, the kids did not take CBD alone. Instead, they were given sedatives, antipsychotics, and 1.5% THC along with cannabidiol.

Since commercial CBD products don’t have more than 0.3% THC, it’s hard to say whether they’ll exhibit the same results as seen in this study.

How to Use CBD for Kids?

Kids don’t exactly enjoy the idea of taking medication, especially when they’re already dealing with a bothersome disease. Thus, you’ll have to be a bit smart when administering CBD oil to kids.

An easy way to do this is by adding a few drops to their food. Since CBD oil is fat-soluble, adding it to your child’s food is a fuss-free way to administer the compound.

However, don’t add CBD oil to water unless it’s a water-soluble kind. Otherwise, it will have minimal bioavailability and possibly will have little to no effect.

As a parent, it can be excruciating to know that a possible solution for your child’s misery is illegal in your region. Some parents may even move to a different state to use CBD oil for kids.

Fortunately, the medicinal use of CBD is legal in most states of the US today. However, there are some restrictions that you need to consider before buying CBD for kids.

Firstly, CBD is illegal in all forms in Idaho, Iowa, and South Dakota. Furthermore, there may be conditions you need to be wary of. For instance, many other states mandate that CBD can only come from hemp and not marijuana.

In some states like Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, and Arkansas, you can’t use CBD food or beverages. So before you start buying CBD oil for kids, make sure you’re familiar with all CBD-related rules in your region.

Factors Parents Should Consider Before Giving Kids CBD

Consult a Doctor

If you want to give CBD to your kid for any particular health condition, you should talk to your physician first. The doctor can give you the best advice according to your child’s condition. Moreover, he can recommend a suitable CBD dose and what possible side effects your child can face.

However, there are not many medical professionals experienced in this particular area. So, you might have to search thoroughly to find one.

Buy CBD Product from Reputable Brand

Since many companies claim to be the best CBD manufacturers, it is hard to find a trustworthy product.

However, when shopping for CBD for kids, see if there are signs of a reliable brand. If a product label has many buzzwords, including organic, pure, or related terms, consider them a warning for a bogus product.

To identify a reputable product, look out for the following information on the product label:

  • Active CBD amount per serving
  • Overall weight
  • Name of the manufacturer or seller
  • Recommended dose
  • Clear mention of ‘Broad-spectrum, full-spectrum or isolate”
  • Ingredients and supplement fact section

Also, you can check the products’ “Certificate of Analysis (COA)” on the brand’s website, which confirms its positive reputation.

CBD Dose

Can kids use CBD without a dose limitation? By and large, CBD works differently for everyone. Therefore, there’s no one recommended dose for it.

The World Health Organization (WHO), in a report, concludes that it is nearly impossible to overdose on CBD. However, you must take extra care to decide the dose While administering CBD to kids.

An ideal approach is to start with a low dose. This would allow you to analyze its effects on the kid and prevent any harsh outcomes. In addition, if your kid reacts positively to CBD, you may also gradually increase the dose.
