CBD Benefits – What are the benefits of CBD?

Benefits of CBD

Some users might think of CBD as a new remedy, but people back in 2900 B.C were also using marijuana.

Today, CBD’s popularity is on a spike due to the promising scientific research around it.

Almost all CBD benefits are because the compound interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. Since this system is responsible for controlling a host of bodily functions, anything that acts on it can have a significant effect.

That’s why CBD is a multi-purpose treatment.

In this guide, we’ll discuss CBD benefits and what research has found over the years about this miraculous cannabinoid.

What Is CBD?

CBD is a compound found in the hemp plant. However, it’s not the only constituent of the plant.

The Cannabis sativa plant contains over 120 cannabinoids, but CBD happens to be the most useful one.

Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors inside the body, stimulating or altering different functions. As a result, it can induce sleep and pain relief.

Owing to this property of the cannabinoid, scientists set to work to find out its potential in therapeutics. The results from most studies are optimistic.

Another common cannabinoid in the hemp plant is THC.

However, it’s excluded from most CBD products due to its psychoactive properties. In different studies, scientists have found that CBD works best with THC.

After this finding, many companies replaced CBD isolate – which only contains CBD – with broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD.

Besides THC, other minor cannabinoids, such as CBG, CBC, and CBN, also boost the action of CBD through the entourage effect.

CBD Benefits

Research has found a ton of CBD benefits. Let’s discuss them all in detail.

  1. Pain Relief
As mentioned earlier, the endocannabinoid system controls different processes in the body. One of them is pain regulation. The ECS sends signals to the nervous system. As a result, you feel the sensation of pain. CBD reduces pain by impacting the neurotransmitters released by the ECS. Thus, it helps in lessening the feeling of pain and inflammation.

In a study conducted on rats, it was found that injecting CBD reduced post-surgery pain.

Initially, only animal studies were conducted to determine the CBD benefits. Today, human trials are also underway. Fortunately, many of them show positive results.

A 2008 research indicated the importance of cannabinoids in the management of pain that’s difficult to treat with conventional medicines.

Sativex is an oral spray that has been approved for pain relief in many countries for multiple sclerosis. A study containing 47 human study subjects examined the impact of Sativex on the users for a month.

The results showed an improvement in pain and muscle spasms.

  2. Anxiety Relief
Being the sixth-largest contributor to disability in the world, as per WHO, anxiety disorders are growing at an alarming rate. CBD may also be able to help against anxiety since it alters hormonal release in the brain. The central hormone in the process is serotonin, which is also called the feel-good hormone. In animal studies, it was seen that CBD helped in reducing stress. It also decreased the symptoms of anxiety and induced sleep in insomniac patients.

Currently, scientists aren’t entirely sure about the working mechanism of CBD for anxiety relief. However, many studies point towards a difference in serotonin and dopamine concentrations.

The conventional route to anxiety relief is through prescription meds, such as benzodiazepines. However, studies have shown that they can potentially cause substance abuse and lead to addiction.

A study on CBD administration showed that it helped in treating insomnia and inducing sleep in kids with PTSD. Another study also showed CBD to be effective in reducing the stress related to public speaking in people with social anxiety.

  3. Skin Conditions
The topical application of CBD helps in treating acne and other skin conditions. Since CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, it plays a role in blocking the underlying causes of acne breakouts. In a test-tube study, it was found that CBD prevented the secretion of extra sebum from the sebaceous glands. Moreover, it has anti-inflammatory actions and blocks the production of pro-acne agents.

Some other studies also showed similar results, but there’s a dire need to have more human-based research.

Today, you can easily find CBD-infused lotions, creams, serums, cosmetics, and skincare.

  4. Anti-Seizure
According to the American Epilepsy Society, CBD is a hopeful intervention for seizure disorders, as indicated by research. A 2016 study showed that epileptic patients who took 2mg to 5mg of CBD every day had 36.5% fewer seizures in the 12-week research period. However, in this 214-person study, 12% of the subjects suffered from adverse side effects. Due to these ambiguities, it’s essential to conduct more research on humans and find the right dosage for CBD.
  5. Cardiovascular Health
Research around cardiac health has found CBD to be a heart-healthy compound.A study conducted in rats showed that CBD lessened oxidative stress in diabetic study subjects, thus preventing heart damage in the long run. Along with directly reducing heart damage, CBD also helps cardiac wellness indirectly by lowering hypertension.

A study with male subjects showed that 600mg of CBD helped reduce the resting blood pressure. However, future research on humans will confirm CBD’s benefits, especially in diabetic people.

  6. Psychiatric Disorders
A systematic review examined the benefits of medicinal CBD in treating psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia.Another 2015 review indicated that CBD might help combat the effects of schizophrenia through a reduction in psychotic symptoms. More research is needed in this area because scientists still haven’t found the right formulation and dosage for psychiatric disorders. Some experts warn that patients should not take CBD products with a high THC amount.

Also, there’s not enough evidence for the effectiveness of CBD against psychotic disorders in children.

Final Words

If we start making a CBD benefits list, it could go on for a long time because recent research has opened the doors for testing CBD potential. Moreover, most countries have lifted the ban on the compound.

That allows researchers to test the cannabinoid’s medicinal benefits and properties.

After reading this guide, you must have learned about different CBD benefits. However, when using CBD for any reason, make sure you’re taking the correct dosage. Plus, consult your doctor beforehand for chronic cases.
